If you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist may have recommended dental implants to fill the gap. But what are dental implants and how do they work?
Dental implants explained
A dental implant is a titanium post/screw that we put into your jaw bone at the point where the root of your lost tooth would once have been. Once the dental implant is in place, a process called osseointegration occurs – this is when the bone connects with and strengthens around the implant to hold it firmly in place. This can take between three and six months.
You can have a single dental implant or multiple implants. We can also place several implants to act as a secure base for a special bar or ball attachment on to which a full arch of false teeth can be connected to provide implant-retained dentures.
In the case of a single implant, once the titanium post is secure, we then attach a part called the ‘abutment’ to it before attaching a prosthetic tooth to the abutment. As the abutment emerges from your gum line, the false tooth looks like the real thing.
Dental implant safety
Dental implants are widely tolerated by most people and have an excellent safety record. If you care for dental implants properly with regular cleaning, dental check-ups and hygienist visits, they can last as long as your natural teeth. On the flipside, if you neglect your implants, they are just as prone to gum disease and infection as real teeth.
There are some contraindications to dental implants. When people come to us about having dental implants in Hook, we always work on a case by case basis, taking a comprehensive medical history and making a full assessment in order to determine whether someone is a suitable candidate for dental implants.
Dental implant treatment length
In most cases, we would expect dental implant treatments between four to six months, or longer. Before we begin your treatment we will need to make sure that you are dentally fit. If you have areas of substantial bone loss, for example, you may need a bone graft in order for us to have enough bone to place your implant. If so, this would be built into your treatment plan, extending it by several months. Whatever your unique case, we are committed to creating the best treatment plan for your needs.
Natural-looking results and long-lasting benefits
Dental implants are as close as we can currently get to Mother Nature. They look, function and have the strength of natural teeth. They also play an important role in stimulating bone growth and density in the jaw bone, which helps to protect your underlying facial structure and protect you from future tooth and bone loss.
Dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime, and can help to prevent the need for future dental treatment.
